Navigating the pages associated with CIS17:
I strongly suggest that you take a little while and navigate my web site so that you
familiarize yourself with what is available and where it is located. There are notes,
PowerPoint presentations and sample programming examples that will benefit you as you learn
the material.
There are two texts required as reference for this course. The primary text is on logic
and the secondary text deals with programming - emphasis in this text is on Visual Basic,
although other languages are covered.
On the home page for the course:
The home page for the course gives you access to all of the site pages that
apply to the course that you are taking. The listing on the left side gives you access to
each category. On the right, you will see the Weekly Schedule. This is what you should
follow. If will tell you what to do each week.
About This Course
.
- Read Me First: The page that you are currently reading.
- Introduction to CIS17: This deals with teaching methods and expectations
and should be read by all students to make sure you follow the requirements for submitting
work etc.
- Syllabus: Course syllabus for CIS17
Site Resources:
The student should use the weekly
schedule to tell them what to read and look at in each of these site resource categories.
For example, if I say to look at the PowerPoint that goes with assignment #1, you should go to the Presentations
and find the appropriate PowerPoint. The same applies to Notes and Handouts, Examples and
Programs.
- Notes and Handouts: This points to additional information or clarification.
- Examples: This category will contain examples of things we are doing such
as Access databases, flowcharting and pseudocode examples. The examples will supplement things we do in class and
is important especially for students taking the course by Distance Learning.
- Programs: This section will have sample programs that we discuss to illustrate points in the class. They
will be in a variety of languages.
- Presentations: This category points to PowerPoint presentations that will provide additional information
to accompany the notes and handouts. I consider the PowerPoint Presentations a key especially
for Distance Learning Students. It is a very valuable resource and students should make a
point of always looking at the assigned presentations.
- Bulletin Board: This is a resource where students can communicate, pose questions, discuss problems they
are encountering and ask for help.
I moderate the bulletin board but only occasionally, so do
not expect to get answers from me often. If you want to ask me a question, use the email
account I will give you in class.
Weekly Schuedule:
I have already mentioned the third category, Weekly Schedule. This is the outline of the
course that you should follow. Your success in the course is closely related to how carefully
you follow the weekly schedule. The schedule will include things to read, resources to check both
at the web site and other places and assignments and quizzes that must be passed in.
Several times a week, you should check this weekly schedule to determine what you are being
asked to do.
