Introduction to CIT11 and the Syllabus. Please read though the chapter entitled Terms of Endearment - Defining IT. On the preliminary version of the book this is chapter #1 and #2, on the final version it is just chapter #1. Read several articles about the history of computers - you can find links for these articles under Information Links at this site. Week #2 Assignments Week of September 8th |
Please read the chapter in your text entitled What the Digerati Know. I would experiment
with some of the things covered in the chapter using a computer - playing helps! This week I want you to get involved with a word processor. Information about open source word processors, Word and WordPerfect are available at the web site under links. Please let me how familiar you are with word processing. Your assignment will be based on your evaluation of yourself. Note that the reading you do on word processing can be entered as logbook entries. Please read the chapter in your text entitled Making the Connection. Your logbook entries this week should be on subjects related to the Internet. There are a couple of sites on my list of links that provide lots of information in a wide variety of areas. Read to supplement what you read in the book and follow your interests. Assignments to turn in: Write a short paper: Assume that you are a college instructor or high school teacher explaining to your students how to make sure that that the information they get off the web is factual and reliable. Week #7 Assignments Week of October 13th |
We are going to continue working with the web this week. Please get your pages
set to be able to load them onto a web site. Look at the PowerPoint presentation
about loading pages to a site using a free provider. I used www.brinkster.com. Assignments to turn in: I want you to get your web pages loaded on the web. I would suggest signing up for a free site at www.brinkster.com and then following my directions on the presentation. When you site is loaded, send me the address. If you have problems, let me know. Lets try for having it up in three weeks. Do the exercises on page 174 (the end of chapter #6). |

Week #10 Assignments Week of November 3rd |
Read the chapter in your book entitled Following Instructions. Do some additional
reading under the links for this course on hardware and operating systems. Try
to develop a basic understanding of hardware components and how an operating system
works. You should also understand a little about the various kinds of operating

Read the chapter in the book called Sound, Light, Magic. Note that we are
skipping a chapter that we will cover later - probably in another course. Find a web site that deals with Excel and do start to get comfortable with its use. Look at the presentation on introduction to Excel. It uses an image in the subdirectory images and wants to link to a page in more. This shows you the page in the subdirectory more.
