Database Design - CIS39

Weekly Schedule

Week Information
Assignments due in one week unless otherwise stated. I may add some things during the week, so double check the schedule each week! Please keep copies of all work you submit until you receive your final grade at the end of the semester.
Week #14/#15 Assignments
Week of December 1st
Please contact me separately and we will construct the rest of the course. You should also contact me about the final when you are ready.
Week #13 Assignments
Week of November 24th
This Tuesday, the Tuesday of Thanksgiving week - I am going to hold an open lab in K101 from 9 to 4 with some time away at 2 for a meeting. This is a catch up day, so if you are behind try very hard to come for as many hours as you can.
Check back with your plan so I can post addition!
Week #12
Week of November 17th
I need to hear from you and I need a plan! I will post the information for this week after I hear from you!
Week #11
Week of November 10th
Advisement starts this week!
Please read chapter #8 in the text.
Assignments:
Please work on the quiz - it is due November 16th and there are late penaltys of 10% if it is not on time!
This week I would like you to implement the Pedigree Dog design that you did. You can implement it in Oracle, Access or MySQL depending on which you are comfortable with. Then I want you to test all of the relationships by doing queries in SQL following the SQL guidelines in your text. You need to submit the queries and tell me what you are testing. This is an individual project. Remember, you are testing your design so you should enter data that will allow you to see if it is working.
When you are ready to submit the things at google docs, let me know. I also need homework!!!!
Week #10 Assignments
Week of November 3rd
Meditech presentation on campus, Thursday at 11 in K101
Please do some research on Entity-Relationship diagrams. \
Assignments: In researching Entity-Relationship diagrams, tell me the sites you used and write me a brief paper explaining how they are developed, what information they convey and how they are used.
Quiz
Week #9
Week of October 27th
I need to know who is still in this class - I am only receiving work from one of you. Please get back to me immediately!
Keep reading the text book one chapter a week.
I would like you to make sure you have read about Entity-Relationship diagrams and I would like you to do some research on this topic.
If you want to get in touch with me or turn in homework while I am gone, please send it to the regular address and send a copy to pgrocer@bristol.mass.edu.
Assignments: Do the regular table layouts and do an entity relationship diagram for this project.
Cater Problem
Week #8
Week of October 20th
I have posted another assignment at google docs and sent you an invitation. It is about a movie card. I need you to collaborate on a solution.
Check back!
Week #7
Week of October 13th
There are a lot of assignments that have been given that I have not received. Please get in touch with me! I need you to continue reading in the book - please be sure you have read the parts that deal with normalization and developing a relational database.
Each semester, I usually give one catch up week. This is your catch up week. Please take advantage of it!
Week #6
Week of October 6th
Please check back. I want you to start the week working on the assignments at Docs.
In addition to the book, you should be doing research on normalization and relational databases
Assignments: Read two more articles and send me a brief summary of what you are reading.
Assignments: Limousine db
This design will be done with me, please send me your thoughts and we will discuss.
Week #5
Week of September 29th
I am waiting for some action on the credit union assignment.
I would like you to find two other sites/articles to read on designing a relational database in third normal form. Please read chapter #4 and chapter #5 in the text.
Assignments: Please send me the addresses and a brief summary of the articles.
I have posted another design at Docs for you to collaborate on. This one is a Dog Store Design.
I want a different person starting the design for this assignment.
Week #4
Week of September 22nd
We have not been impacted by the eLearning problems at BCC - it does not relate to this course, so we will continue with the course on the standard college schedule.
I just checked google docs and I need to see you start to work together on the credit union design problem. One of you needs to go in and lay out a table or two and the others need to go in and give their opinion, make changes and indicate where they think it should go. Add a table, change a table etc. The final product should be an agreement or a partial agreement with differences being shown. This should all be done on google docs - it is in the introductory document that you have all visited. Again - I am not looking for implementation, just the layout.
Please read: Understanding Normalization
Assignments: I would like you to describe a basic computer system that you are familiar with (payroll, hobby etc) Explain the system to me and describe the files/tables that are involved. Stay basic!
Week #3
Week of September 15th
I would like you to look over chapter #3. It focuses on SQL and Access and that is really not our emphaisis in this course.
Please read the following handouts:
Student database
Payroll database
Please view the following PowerPoint presentations:
Normalization - information on third normal form
Separate speaker notes for normalization presentation
Relational database information - information on 1 to 1, 1 to M, and M to M
Separate speaker notes for relational database information
Assignments: I have put up a credit union design problem on google docs. I would like you to collaborate on the assignment.
Week #2
Week of September 8th
Please read the second chapter in the text. Your book uses Access as an example to illustrate some fairly standard database concepts especially those involving querying. I would like to have you use a database to experiment as well. Access is the obvious choice since it matches the book, but if you prefer to use Oracle or MySQL, that is fine as well. Please let me know what database you want to use to experiment (at least at the beginning - you can play with more than one if you want to).
We will spend most of the semester on design, but the basics of understanding how to query data will help!
Assignments: I would like you to go through chapter #2 working with their examples, make sure you are comfortable with making a table, adding and deleting records to the table, querying the table in a variety of ways - chapter 2 focuses on the user interface of Access. Next week we will look more at the SQL. I want you to experiment and then send me an email telling me what you did, whether you experimented in Access (my recommendation since it follows the book), Oracle or MySQL (if you use these you should probably focus on SQL).
I have sent you an invitation to google docs where we can collaborate. Please accept the invitation and introduce yourself.
Please note that something got erased from week #1 - do not know how I did it! It is back!
Week #1
Week of September 1st
The first thing you should do is familiarize your self with the site. There are a lot of examples and presentations you will find useful. Please send me an email with information about an email address you want to use to communicate with the other student taking this course. Check back after I get this information (Wednesday I hope).
Assignments:
