| Week #15 Week of May 8th |
May 9th is an open lab day for help from 9:00 to 3:00 in K101. The final and status sheet will be posted one week before your exam. Please remember that the homework assignments make up most of your grade - you need to get them to me! Your final exam is scheduled for 8:000 on May 16th in K101. You can either email me the final prior to 8:00 on May 16th or you can come to the final and take or complete it. I do not recommend planning to do the entire final in the 2 scheduled hours. The final is given on the honor system - I trust you to only discuss it with me! I will be out on Tuesday, the rest of the week we will finish
up anything to cover in JavaScript and give you time to work on
the quizzes. Tuesday, the 9th will be an all day help session in K101.
Details about the final exam will be posted. Your final is scheduled for May 16th. It will be posted on the website one week ahead so check back next week for details. As always, just check back! Advisement Question: Several students have had difficulty finding the course they wanted if it is a Student
Option Enrollment Course. You should look under distance learning in the course catalog - the course is not
listed under regular classes. Confusing - YES!!! We will continue with JavaScript this week. Please be sure you have looked at the function examples and started looking at loops. | Week #9 Week of March 27th |
Open Lab:On Tuesday, March 28th, I am going to hold open labs in all my classes in K101. I will be there
from 9:00 until 2:00 (11:00 has been requested, if I am not there at 11:00 I will
be in my office or the general lab - but hopefully I will be in K101). You may come
during your regular class time or at any time during the period for help. If you are
behind, you should make every effort to at least drop in and touch bases with me. I started an introduction to JavaScript last week and I will continue. If you are able to come to class, this is an important time to do so - especially if you have no programming background. The following is a good tutorial. I recommend you read it. Good tutorial If you are not comfortable with if logic, you should look at the following presentation carefully, otherwise you can just use it for the assignment. When commenting at the evaluation blog - I wanted you to click on the comments for the individual pages
so you could see everyones comments about a particular site - for those who have not done the
assignment yet, please follow this model. NOTE: You have been invited to two blog (one for the class and one for a specific assignment), you have also been invited to a wiki. You need to get involved in all three and contribute. If there is a problem with access, you need to let me know! In addition, you are supposed to have your own blog (that makes 3) where you are keeping your weekly log of articles read. Have I totally confused you yet? I have gone through most of the CSS examples under XHTML. This week we will look at a few additional examples. I have added to the links section, so please take a look at some of the CSS links I added. This is an excellent site for information about XHTML, CSS and JavaScript This looks like another interesting source for information about CSS: htmldog.com and another CSS Commands (a list I found) and another Looks interesting... and still another More CSS... Here is the address for validating CSS: W3C CSS Validation Service The part of JavaScript we will start with this week is JavaScript Events. Be sure to look at the samples under the topic JavaScript Events and the PowerPoint about JavaScript events. We will then start looking at some other JavaScript examples. Recommended book: Programming the Web Using XHTML and JAVASCRIPT by Larry Randles Lagerstrom (McGraw-Hill ISBN # 0-07-256031-2) You should be finding a tutorial on the Web or acquiring a book on JavaScript if you did not buy the recommended book. The recommended book is a reference book - you should use at this point to help with JavaScript. Assignments to turn in: Wiki: Don't forget our wiki adventure! I want you to use to create a list of things to consider when you are developing a web site. The site is at Wiki for web site development One of the important things to experiment with is editing someone elses entries. They won't mind as long as you are tactfully improving what they did or just commenting. After all, it is part of the assignment. If you do not have the invitation to wiki, let me know and I will invite you again. I am looking for a really extensive list here, so get busy! Another nag... I will be attending a conference on Friday, so class is cancelled. We completed most of my examples for CSS, we will finish the rest this week. You should be experimenting with putting up pages on the web - even if they are not what you finally want to do - just to make sure you are comfortable with the process. You should start looking at web page design and development issues for your blog. Remember I need the address of your blog because I check it at midsemester to see how it is going. Assignments to turn in: Your evaluation assignment is at: Evaluation Blog Respond at the blog and send me a copy of your comments in a word document. An invitation to join the blog has been sent to your BCC account. Only members are allowed to post comments. Please post your comments underneath the the name of the site by clicking on comments associated with that site (you will have to scroll down a little to see them). I left up last semesters comments because I thought you might find them interesting. CSS Assignment Extra credit if you get it to validate in XHTML. | Week #6 Week of February 27th |
We are going to look CSS and creating a web page this week. Be sure to
look at the examples in XHTML and the PowerPoint presentation. Look at the examples under CSS (both HTML and XHTML). You should start looking at web page design and development issues for your log book. Please set up an area on Brinkster or another provider that you can use for your web site. Brinkster is located at www.brinkster.com and has free student websites. Look at the information on the smartboard presentation. I have added an introduction to using Brinkster under the smartboard notes. Be sure to look at the examples that have been posted under CSS sample code (XHTML) and the PowerPoint presentation under Presentations (XHTML). Looks like an interesting site for CSS information I only explored some things! Start thinking about your web site. There are two presentations under sites at the following site that might be helpful: Site Information We will talk a little about what makes a good site: A starting point for discussion Assignments to turn in: First web project - Should be done in 5 weeks Note that a working web site is required for this course. You cannot pass the course if you do not have a working website written in HTML or XHTML. Blog Post: Remember to visit the blog and post some discussion on the subject of frames. | Week #5 Week of February 20th |
We got through frames last week and I introduced mapping. Please look at the
PowerPoint presentation on frames and mapping and the examples under frames and mapping. Look at the examples of mapping in both XHTML and HTML shown below: mapimage.html - validates strict Mapping an image (HTML) Example of a mapped flowchart (HTML) Look at the PowerPoint presentation on mapping. I have been added Smartboard captures and audio as the semester has progressed, please use them if they help yu understand. This week we will look at forms and iframes (Kristy will give an example of iframes on Tuesday). Next week you will get an assignment about putting up a site. I will talk about that in class this week, but the assignment does not officially happen until next week! I am going to be away at a conference on Friday. The lab will still be available if you want to come in and work on assignments. Assignments to turn in: Mapping assignment Form and syl assignment NOTE: Do not use the PRE command to put things into your project. I want you to do the formatting with tables, lists etc. I also want you to use CSS in the assignment. Also make sure your form is different from the samples I provide - be original. If you are having problems getting the form to work, don't worry - send it to me and I will test it. This is not the best way to do forms (the best way is server side forms) - so don't worry if your provider makes it difficult to do. | Week #4 Week of February 13th |
I am moving faster than I planned in class so I have actually covered tables and images. I
need the class to work their way through this material. You should definately look at the examples
and view the souce of the examples. Beyond this you can use presentations, smartboad, audio, and
tutorials you find on the web to back up your understanding. I will be starting frames this week. There are three assignments this week: one on tables and images and two on frames since we will be looking at frames in class. The first frame assignment will be done in class by in class students. I have sent you an optional invitation to use instant messaging with me if you feel it would be helpful. I have also sent you a message to become a member of a general class blog. I will use this as the semester progresses, so you should become a member of that. Please make sure you have looked at this example on embedded lists: Embedded lists By the end of this week, you should have looked at all of the examples under links, tables and all of the examples under images. Examples You should also have looked at the PowerPoint Presentations up through images. Presentations In addition, you should have found and be looking at one or more tutorials on these topics for your log book. As always, check back to see how we are doing... Last week we looked at linking and started tables, we will continue tables this week. You
should be sure you have looked at the examples and presentations for this topic. We will
also look at images this week.
You should look at the examples under CSS style, links, tables and images and you should
look at the accompanying PowerPoints. A list of CSS I found Assignments to turn in: Style (CSS) and links assignment I have not received many search engine assignments, so I have not corrected them yet! Keeping up with XHTML is the first priority, but you need to get the search engine assignments in as well. Check back to see if I add an assignment, I probably will but I will also give you some class time to work on the assignments. |

I have had some questions about how to take pictures of screens. The answer
can be found at PrintScreen Finish looking at the examples under XHTML -Intro and look at the second PowerPoint presentation. Look at the examples under CSS and formatting and look at the third PowerPoint presentation. Be sure you note what validates and what does not validate as you experiment and try validating with strict and with transitional. You should read something about the difference between strict and transitional for one of your blog entries. Note that the best source for telling if my examples validated is the PowerPoint presentation or the comments on the listing. Validating issues will continue to haunt us! For one of your articles this week, please do some research on validating! Check back to see how we are doing! Look at the examples under XHTML - Getting started at:
XHTML samples. Also look at the first PowerPoint that explains the examples. It is located at XHTML presentations. Note that these sites can be reached by clicking on XHTML sample code and Presentations (XHTML) under Site Resources on the left side of the CIS44 home page. Next you should look at the first 6 examples under XHTML intro. In addition you should start to look at the second PowerPoint that explains the introduction samples. You only need to go through the PowerPoint to see the explaination for the first 6 examples. You should familiarize yourself with the site so you can locate information. These four lines of code which I usually cover a little later in the semester will help you get a clean validation: Code with first 4 lines of XHTML Separate 4 lines of code in text file Assignments to turn in: Although assignments are frequently posted at the beginning of the week, some of the assignments cannot be done until you have covered all the material in the posting. The search engine assignment is something to research on your own, I will not go over the material at this site.
